2017 Wall Police Coaster Derby
The twelfth annual Wall Township Police Coaster Derby will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 28, 2017. Local youth’s ages seven to thirteen will race their derby cars approximately seven hundred feet on a straight, inclined race course on Industrial Road. Drivers rely solely on gravity to propel their derby cars from the starting ramp to the finish line. Competitors race side by side in two lanes in the timed event. The four drivers with the fastest average time in two races compete for the overall Grand Champion award.
In 2006, the Wall Township Police Department resurrected the popular coaster derby, which hadn’t been held in the Township for several years. All the contestants receive participation awards. One male and one female driver will receive recognition for having the “Best Appearing Cars” and one driver will receive an award for having the “Best Constructed Car.” There is also a “Kids Choice” award and an award for the “Best Theme Car.”
This year, the derby will be a one day event. Derby cars will be inspected on race day at the Glendola Firehouse located on the race course on Industrial Road. Car inspections will begin at 8:00 a.m. and the drivers must be present to be weighed-in with their cars. All derby cars will be technically inspected for safety and to insure that the car was constructed in accordance with the Wall Police Coaster Derby specifications. Once their car is inspected, each driver will have the opportunity to make one practice run on the race course.
Last year the race attracted several new racers. This year’s event is expected to attract even more new racers with other new activities being worked on for between the races. Anyone interested in becoming a sponsor for this year’s event please contact Sgt. Mike Tozer at mtozer@wallpolice.org or 732-449-4500 ext. 1132.
